Volunteer opportunities in the parks range from helping in our gardens to being a Master Angler, to leading or assisting in any training. Current volunteer opportunities are listed below. SEASONAL POSITIONS AVAILABLE!!! Be a part of New York City’s exciting cultural life working outdoors in uniquely beautiful parks in Lower Manhattan. Battery Park City Parks Conservancy needs seasonal workers in the following areas:

HORTICULTURE March–November Perform all aspects of horticultural maintenance to include pruning, planting, grooming, dividing, I.P.M., and soil management. Must have minimum 3 years of work experience in the field or a horticulture degree.

MAINTENANCE May – October Hands-on physical labor in keeping park sites and structures clean, safe, and in operable condition.  Must have experience using hand & power tools.  Prior related work experience desirable.  Shifts vary.  Weekends required.

PARKS PROGRAMMING May – October Coordinate and implement public programs for all ages and audiences.  Includes sports, fishing, music, and art.  Significant experience working with children, families in a camp, school, or community center setting required.  Must have excellent judgment, and verbal communication skills.  Weekends required.

ASSISTANT HORTICULTURIST has no qualms about working outdoors at times, and in a fast-paced environment. Assisting in performing all aspects of horticultural maintenance including: All aspects of plant care: pruning, planting, grooming, dividing, weeding, and propagating; Assist in safely, effectively, and efficiently maintaining and operating various types of equipment; Work in conjunction with various departments of BPCPC, to insure Battery Park City is maintained at the highest standards; Keep knowledge and skills current and up to date by reading periodicals and books, and attending the appropriate courses, seminars, and conferences; Interact with the public by providing plant identification and other requested information where possible in a consistently polite and friendly manner; and Snow and ice removal, including the use of snow shovels, ice breakers, snow blowers and salt spreaders on a emergency and non-emergency basis during weekdays and weekends.

COMMUNITY CENTER SUPERVISOR Supervising and coordinating day-to-day activities of the community center to include scheduling and allocation of work assignments; Monitoring facility and program expenditures and assisting with all record keeping and budget preparation; Working with management staff to improve program/facility offerings; continuously evaluating programs and activities in identifying short- and long-range facility needs; and Responding to questions from the general public and explaining community center programs, policies and procedures. Must have American Red Cross or similar CPR Certification; American Red Cross or similar Lifeguard Certification; and 2+ Years Supervisor skills in a recreational facility.

 All positions require work in all weather conditions, and a valid U.S. driver’s license.
